On Wednesday, 5 October 2011, 25 UK offices of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) completed a volunteering event for local charities. The theme this year was employability, with the aim of making a long-lasting impact in the firm’s local communities by sharing skills and fundraising to help people not only get into work, but sustain their employment and skills into the future. PwC’s nationwide community day is set to raise money for local charities and share vital employability skills.
In Plymouth, around 40 PwC staff worked at Shekinah, offering their support on CV writing and skills sharing, cooking food in the drop in centre and revamping its charity shop on Union Street. The Charity helps a wide range of adults, youth and ex-offenders living in Plymouth and South Devon to deal with their individual issues and move on by tackling the complex issues of homelessness, substance misuse and social exclusion with its non-judgemental, holistic and integrated approach.
Eugene McCann, Office Senior Partner, leading the activities in Plymouth said: “In Plymouth we chose to work with Shekinah because they are an important charity for developing the future of local residents in the community. We hope events like this give people the chance to raise the aspirations and skills of people who might not have had much insight into the world of work.”
"Shekinah has recognised over the years that we all have a role to play in addressing issues such as homelessness. Creative partnerships with local employers such as PWC can have a profound and lasting impact for individuals and the local community," says John Hamblin, chief executive, Shekinah. "We hope that this will be the start of a long lasting relationship with PWC where both organisations will benefit from each other's knowledge and experience," he adds.
